This Memory Looks Soft on Us

In one of my first memories of you
you are leaning on your bicycle,
handsome, self-assured,
the lush dark growing in around you.

We were fighting over
what is essentially syntax
which is essentially
the order of the world:

You, lazy with confidence
saying the personal was political,
me, flush with fear, feeling it
the other way round.

This memory,
you know,
looks soft on us.

Our imperfect love
still keeps me up at night,
still moves in a thrill
of blood through my lips.
