Running on Empty

K says I need to stop falling
in love with my sadness. Says
I need to stop holding the door
open for boys who like my mouth
shut. Says I am better than this.

I don’t know what ‘this’ is. All I
know is I am so full of empty
I could burst. All I know of
coming alive is in the hands
of a boy and bare, broken skin.

All I know is if I am not
sad then I am nothing at all.
